Two women attending Thursday’s Redbridge Council meeting were refused entry to the public gallery unless they removed their keffiyehs.

One of the women is Arab, for whom the keffiyeh also has cultural significance.

This requires a clear explanation from @RedbridgeLive.

What specific Council rule prohibited them from entering while wearing a keffiyeh, who authorised the decision, and on what grounds?

If no such rule exists, the Council needs to explain why two members of the public were denied access on the basis of what they were wearing.

Thanks for recording my speech. Money doesn't have a religion by the way and I don't care what religion the person giving the money is. I'm concerned about their motives. Whether it's money going to Reform from middle Eastern sources or money to Labour from questionable sources!

As you weren’t in attendance and clearly haven’t seen the footage of the meeting, let me correct your “recollection” of what happened.

We didn’t get to speak on Broadmead Bridge, much less vote on it.

Similarly, we weren’t in the chamber for the water vote, so the claim that we voted against it is simply false.

As for questions about local services, THREE of our councillors asked detailed questions about local services, and another spoke about Wanstead Leisure Centre delays.

You’re entitled to criticise us. But at least get the basic facts right.

DIVEST PUBLIC FUNDS FROM ISRAEL: WHAT HAPPENED AT REDBRIDGE COUNCIL ON 24 SEPTEMBER

Redbridge Independents, the official opposition to the Labour-led Council, called for the Council’s pension fund to divest from investments connected to Israel.

We were supported by the Green Party @RedbridgeGreens. Our position was simple: public money should not be invested in companies or states implicated in serious violations of international law and the genocide in Gaza.

Labour rejected our approach. Instead, they replaced it with a watered-down call for “responsible investment”, without committing to full divestment.

Our amendments were also rejected.

We therefore refused to support a motion that, in our view, fell far short of the action required.

Later in the meeting, RI Leader Cllr Marwan Elfallah was prevented by the Labour Chair from speaking on other matters, including Broadmead Bridge, a major project with significant implications for taxpayers.

In protest at what we regarded as an unacceptable restriction on legitimate democratic scrutiny, Redbridge Independent councillors left the chamber.

Whatever our political differences, opposition councillors must be able to scrutinise major decisions, challenge the administration and speak on matters affecting the residents they represent.

That is what an opposition is there to do.

Redbridge Independents will continue to challenge the administration, scrutinise its decisions and make sure residents have a strong voice in Town Hall.

After years of one-party dominance, accountability matters more than ever.

🎉 A fantastic day at Punjabi Fest! 🎉

It was wonderful to see Mayfield School come alive as the local community gathered to celebrate Punjabi culture, music, food and heritage. ❤️

From delicious desi street food and shopping stalls to live entertainment, Punjabi mascots and family activities, there was something for everyone.

But the best part was seeing people of different backgrounds and generations coming together, celebrating the rich culture and diversity that makes Redbridge such a special place.

A huge thank you to the organisers, volunteers, performers, stallholders and everyone who helped make Punjabi Fest such a vibrant and enjoyable community event. 🙌
