An apt day to remember that Dolly Parton once recorded a cover of Stairway to Heaven - and, in defiance of every moral law in the universe, she absolutely owned it.

[Anish Moonka @anishmoonka]

The doctor who delivered Dolly Parton in a one-room Tennessee cabin in 1946 was paid with a sack of cornmeal. Her father farmed other people's land and could not read or write. Eighty years later, the reading program she built in his name has mailed more than 300 million books.

She wrote "I Will Always Love You" on the same afternoon she wrote "Jolene," as a goodbye to Porter Wagoner, and released it in 1974. Elvis wanted it. The night before the session, Colonel Tom Parker called and said Presley would only record it if they got half the publishing, meaning half of everything the song ever earned. She had been in Nashville ten years by then. She said no, and cried all night. Whitney Houston cut her version in 1992, held number one for fourteen weeks, and Forbes later put Parton's royalties from it near $10 million. She put some of that money into an office complex in Nashville and called the place the house that Whitney built.

Dollywood opened in Pigeon Forge in 1986 because she wanted paychecks in the county she came from. Around 4,000 people work there now. Three million visitors come every year. The University of Tennessee put its economic impact at $1.8 billion, and it is the largest employer in Sevier County. Since 2022 the company has paid tuition, fees, and books in full for every worker from their first day, seasonal hires included.

Wildfires tore through those mountains in November 2016, killing fourteen people and destroying more than 2,400 buildings. Her foundation was handing out money within 48 hours. Every family that lost a home got $1,000 a month for six months, regardless of income. The final check was $5,000. Total delivered: $8.9 million.

In April 2020 she sent $1 million to Vanderbilt for coronavirus research. When Moderna's vaccine results ran in the New England Journal of Medicine that November, her fund appeared in the footnotes.

Carl Dean, her husband of nearly sixty years, died in March 2025. The note she wrote to fans afterward ended with the same five words she wrote for Porter Wagoner back in 1974. She died in Nashville today. Her family asked that instead of flowers, people give to the Imagination Library, which still mails 3.4 million books a month to children who will never get to meet her.

Most resistance takes the form of its oppression.

If an oppressor communicates through violence, then the oppressor elects violence as the language of negotiating power.

In that circumstance, the oppressed people will fluently speak the language of violence.

A wisdom nugget.

We will pay 100 times the manufacturing cost for a product made in China with a European name on it.

But the moment someone who looks like us tries to charge what their work is worth we question their audacity.

Until we fix how we see each other we will keep funding everyone else's dream while starving our own.

The last time I got a haircut in Barcelona there were a few young guys waiting and I thought now we can have an old-fashioned MotoGP talk...and not one of them knew a single rider´s name except Marc`s...and Angel Nieto´s. That´s not typical but it will be unless someone stops the Paywall. And if you disagree, you have a right to be wrong.

This is how they celebrate 🍾 championships in Spain. It's crazy what's happening at Plaza Cibeles in Madrid, Spain, where people are celebrating with a drone show that's simply spectacular…

Studies now present a striking picture of what happens when private equity firms acquire hospitals and nursing homes: predictable increases in harm and deaths. One landmark study shows: patient deaths up about 11% after such acquisitions.

Very funny

Morty: Capitalism gives everyone a chance to get rich if they just work hard enough.

Rick: Oh my god, Morty! Capitalism doesn't work if everyone wins. It needs poverty to function. Someone has to take the low-paying jobs so the profits keep flowing upward. If everyone had real financial security, no one would take those positions and the system would collapse.

Morty: But Rick, that's just how the market works. Some people earn more because they provide more value.

Rick: Tell that to the kid assembling your iPhone overseas for pennies while some CEO makes millions off it. Capitalism doesn't reward work, it rewards ownership. You don't climb the ladder by working hard, you climb it by owning the ladder. The workers collectively produce infinitely more value than some shareholder living in the Bahamas.

Morty: Okay, but isn't it about freedom People can still move up if they make good choices. Look at people who came from nothing and became successful, like entrepreneurs or celebrities.

Rick: Those are exceptions, idiot. That's why they're on TV. For every one person who makes it out, millions stay stuck because they never had the same luck, connections, or safety nets. The system needs those stories so people believe it's fair.

Reflection: I took years off the South Africans' current affairs cycle.

I felt that the conversation was NOT moving. And I felt I couldn't add anything beyond what I had already contributed.

It was the same conversations, same talking points, same slogans, same vacuous posturing, same empty pledges & chronic never-to-be-followed-up
commitments.

I remember saying to one of the execs in my team, “South Africa became diseased with sameness.”

During that time, we built our international business to be multiple times the size of our SA base.

We built a bigger business in less than half the time with multinational clients & client states that want to get things done.
Sure, they talk. All clients meet, confer, and talk. But after that, they actually MOVE! Stuff gets done!

Since dialling back into the SA discourse over the past few months, I have been sad to realise that South Africa is still talking about the same thing she was talking about 8 years ago.

The needle hasn't moved at all.

And worse, the macros have only become worse.
Much worse.

You can't blame any legacy issue for this. We are living with the consequences of unmitigated & gross negligence.

In my lifetime, I have watched my generations become youth, and live out their youth & eventually no longer classified as youth, still crying out for the same things: more opportunities to better their lives.

Only those that scream loud enough and break enough things are heard, so they are quickly co-opted with some “opportunities” or “board seats” and suddenly silenced.

This is how the system is engineered: If you're silent, you may starve. If you scream, you get co-opted.

But the truth is, the majority were, and many still are, left outside the system.

An entire generation lost.
The country's Overton window is fast closing.

And the only thing our leaders can offer is sampled below.
