Am I dreaming, or did Hungary’s Prime Minister really defend a constitutional amendment that bars his political opponents from Parliament and unlawfully removes the President of the Republic by arguing that it enjoys the unanimous support of a foreign government?

So which is it? Does Hungary still have a sovereign government, or is it simply taking orders from abroad?

Today, Hungary’s Parliament dopted a constitutional amendment that will undermine the country’s constitutional order for the long term.

We say no to this.

Hungary is being pushed toward the gravest constitutional crisis of its modern history by a newly elected Prime Minister who enjoys a constitutional majority and, in theory, should be focused on governing.

Why? A good question. Most likely, a desire for unchecked power.

After failing to force the President to resign, the government now wants to terminate the President’s constitutionally fixed mandate by law. The playbook is the same one used by the communists in 1948. Authoritarianism is accelerating at an alarming pace.

The protests have already begun - even though this is supposed to be the government’s honeymoon period.

Hungarians do not like pocket dictators.

Through Brussels, we have received an indication from Ukraine that they are ready to restore oil deliveries via the Friendship pipeline as early as Monday, provided that Hungary lifts its blockade of the €90 billion EU loan. Hungary’s position has not changed: no oil = no money. Once oil deliveries are restored, we will no longer stand in the way of approving the loan. The disbursement of the loan does not impose a financial burden or obligation on Hungary.
