There are 59 million independent contractors and yet, just a small percentage of us drive rideshare. Nobody asks us what we think, when we're the ones poised to lose our businesses. #fightforfreelancers
1/15 Let's talk media bias (hey @Poynter and @CJR)
Not a single independent contractor is quoted in any of the past 24 hours' coverage of the new @USDOL independent contractor proposed rule.

1/15 The @starledger editorial page editor called me Sept. 21 while researching this piece. I spent 36 minutes explaining how the LAST THING New Jersey needs is to follow California's lead, with overreaching labor laws and one-by-one industry exemptions.

The #fightforfreelancers NJ leaders, on why we need Trenton lawmakers to protect the livelihoods of solopreneurs by sending Senate Bill 599 to Murphy’s desk with a veto-proof majority.
@thekimkavin@KaplanInk@JenSinger
Today, the New Jersey Senate followed the lead of the Assembly and unanimously passed a bill that protects independent contractor status statewide—but only for golf caddies.
This is an insulting slap in the face to every other legit IC in the state. 🤮

Skip to 4:30 to hear yours truly, followed by the great @KaplanInk, letting N.J. lawmakers know at the Statehouse yesterday what we think about their bill to protect independent contractors—but *only* the ones who are golf caddies.

@MarkJosephSuar1@onemorejess3@KaplanInk We’re not going to the Statehouse to debate the status of caddies. We’re going to the Statehouse to call out the ridiculousness of *only* protecting them as independent contractors, when so many others are at least equally deserving of that protection under the law.
Some of our founders testified in Trenton about a bill exempting only golf caddies from the anti-independent contractor ABC Test. To the rest of us, it's like Judge Smails said in Caddyshack: "You'll get nothing and like it."

Know how we fought to protect NJ independent contractors ? Well, one group got protection.
Per diem healthcare workers in Covid surges?
No.
Musicians & entertainers who lost so much in the shutdowns?
Nope....
All ICs deserve protection from the ABC Test.

Yet the #NJcaddygate bill is still moving forward. You'll recall that we fought the bill that would reclassify independent contractors as employees in many instances. This bill will give exemptions to golf caddies only.
Here’s the one-page stinker of a bill, if you’d like to read it, print it out and then throw it into your fireplace in utter disgust.

Fight for Freelancers NJ says thanks to @votebergen for pulling his sponsorship for the #NJcaddygate bill that would carve out independent contractor protections only for caddies.
Big kudos to my NJ State Assemblyman @votebergen for hearing me out via phone this morning, realizing it’s a bad look to give independent contractor protection only to golf caddies in our state, and withdrawing as a co-sponsor of the bill.
Thank you, sir.
Well look at this. An NJ politician who says out loud what we've long said: the ABC Test must be removed from legislation. @jack4NJ calls for freelancers to keep their independent contractor status. #fightforfreelancers https://t.co/Si14L7etlS
Fight for Freelancers NJ is proud to be recognized for its work against ABC Test-based legislation that threatens the livelihoods of independent contractors in NJ: https://t.co/AmWeV7uCs6
READ THIS, @SecMartyWalsh. PAY ATTENTION TO THIS. MA's use of the ABC test is causing great harm to #freelancers/independent contractors. As proven in CA and now MA, the ABC test provides much more harm than good, & should be tossed out forever—both at the USDOL & in #PROAct.
2/10 This article opens with a straw-man argument, telling the story of what sounds like a "permalancer" whose situation would be illegal under *existing* law. That woman's sad tale is then used to suggest the need for passing the #PROAct.
New video series by @Freelancers_USA just launched. The series is called "Right vs. Wrong."
Today's topic: misclassification. It's wrong when it's done to employees--and it's wrong when the ABC Test in the #PROAct will do it to independent contractors.

Dear @CoryBooker, @SenatorMenendez and @RepMalinowski,
You are my voice in D.C. Worker misclassification is wrong, for any reason, and in any law.
Please watch this 2-minute video. The ABC Test must be removed from the #PROAct.
