In 2023, lawyer Lucy Rogers stood silently on Queen Street holding a sign. She wasn't shouting. She wasn't blocking anyone. She wasn't breaking any law.

Police tore up her sign, handcuffed her, and put her in a van - then released her without charge.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority found her arrest was unlawful, the force unjustified, and officers' accounts didn't match the evidence.

Police still defended their actions.
Now, with the Free Speech Union's support, Lucy is taking them to the High Court under the NZ Bill of Rights Act. Hearing set for August.

If this can happen to a criminal defence lawyer who knows her rights - it can happen to anyone.
