The consequences for the Tornado Cash developers are all the more reason why it is of paramount importance to create disruptive technology anonymously or pseudonymously. If you know your creation is going to be poking the bear, regardless of open source or not, you must take every action in your power to protect your identity. In the case of Tornado Cash, the consequence is jail time. In some other cases, the consequences could even be dire. Building with Satoshi level opsec makes building orders of magnitude harder and there is no glory in it, but if that’s the trade off for changing the world, and possibly having even a chance at a normal life in parallel, it’s worth taking. If you’re interested in doxxing for glory or for community, don’t build anything revolutionary, you’re just going to end up in trouble. Of course if a motivated state actor wants to find you, they likely will, but don’t make it easier than it needs to be.
