Winning in Tokyo against a Japanese player, in front of a Japanese crowd, at 31, after two years without a final.

That is not just a comeback. PV Sindhu refused to accept the ending everyone had already written for her.

Let me tell you what actually happened this week, trust me the scoreline hides how big this is.

Sindhu beat Akane Yamaguchi 21-17, 21-17 in the Japan Open final at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium. Straight games. No third set drama.

She just took control and never let go.

Yamaguchi is the world number 3. Sindhu went in ranked world number 12.

And this was not just one good day. Look at the whole week.

In the semifinal she played Chen Yufei of China. World number 4. The Tokyo Olympic gold medallist. Sindhu had lost to her five times in a row. Her last win over Chen was back in 2019, at the World Championships semifinal.

Seven years of losing to the same opponent. This time Sindhu took the first game 21-19, including one rally that went 51 shots, and was leading 15-10 in the second when Chen pulled out with a hamstring injury.

So she got past the Olympic champion and then the world number 3.

Now the numbers that make this historic.

This is her first BWF World Tour title since the Syed Modi International in December 2024. That was a Super 300 event.

This one is a Super 750. That is one level below the very top of the sport. And is Sindhu's first ever Super 750 final, and she won it.

Two Olympic medals. A World Championship gold. And she had never once reached a Super 750 final until this week, at 31. :)

She is also the first Indian woman to reach the Japan Open final, and now the first to win it.

See, for the last two years, Sindhu's name mostly came up in conversations about decline.

Early exits. Injuries. Dropping down the rankings. People arguing about when she should retire and whether she was hanging on too long.

Every young player who beat her got a headline about the changing of the guard.

And meanwhile India also got busy watching everyone else. Lakshya, Satwik and Chirag, the newer names.

This week both Lakshya Sen and Ayush Shetty went out in the first round here. Satwik and Chirag had to retire injured.

By the semifinals, Sindhu was the only Indian left in the entire tournament.

Badminton is one of the most physically brutal sports on the planet. The shuttle can leave a racket at over 400 kmph. Rallies involve constant jumping, lunging and stopping dead. Knees and ankles take a beating every single point.

It is a young person's sport, and the top players usually fade well before 30.

Sindhu has been at the top of world badminton for about a decade. Rio silver in 2016. World Championship gold in 2019, the first Indian ever to become world champion in badminton.

Tokyo bronze in 2021. She is one of only a small handful of women in the history of the sport with two Olympic medals in singles.

She has done that carrying injuries, changing coaches multiple times, and doing it in a country where badminton gets attention for two weeks every four years and then goes quiet.

And here is the thing about being at the top for that long. Everyone has your video. Every coach in the world has broken down your patterns.

Younger players grow up specifically training to beat you. The sport keeps getting faster, and you keep getting older.

Staying relevant in that is harder than getting there in the first place.

And that's what makes this so much impressive.

She won the longer rallies. Against a Japanese player famous for outlasting people, in Japan, the 31 year old was the one still standing at the end of the long points.

Imagine, two years without a final. Rank slipping to 12. A crowd cheering for the other player. And she went and beat the Olympic champion and the world number 3 back to back.

Whatever happens next, she has already given India more than most athletes ever will.

This one is just for her.

It’s been a mad 15 years. It’s had everything thrown in there, from the highest highs to the lowest lows (on and off the field 😜).

My time was up, and no one was going to be able to make that decision other than me.

But in the meantime, I just want to say I ❤️ every single England fan and every single cricket fan who’s supported me over the years.

I ❤️ every single person I’ve walked out onto the field with representing England.

I could go on and on, but I hope you get the gist of how much I loved doing what I did for 15 years.

I’m looking forward to being a fan and supporting the team, and the odd day in hospitality won’t go amiss 🤣.
