First-Gen students applying to grad school! Office hours are for a lot more than letter of recommendation. You need a network of people to help you through the process! I write about applying here:

Our department at Cal State Stanislaus is hiring for two tenure track positions! We’re a supportive department with a particular focus on teaching and student service, along with support for research. It’s a really awesome place to work. Please forward and DM me for details!
@H_Wohl Typically work with senior scholars who put time into their editing. It’s not a good process for junior scholars who need a fast turn around time, but it is a process that is deliberate and considered. The times have changed but I appreciate the long approach for what it is
@H_Wohl It’s a slow process that doesn’t match the times any more it’s true. But that’s not the journals fault. They’ve made a conscious decision to be an enormous resource to the grad students who are on the board, and for those papers that go on to the editing process (2)
Universities will often have pockets of money and resources for creating these types of networks / events. Either professional development funds or grants. Don't be afraid to apply, often times these go under the radar because they are not tied to research.
Grad school can be alienating, but there are other first gens / POC out there! Networking, creating inclusive spaces and finding support is a good strategy for getting through but will also help a ton when you go on the market!

I know how much it takes it out of us to apply in the first place, but the whole process of being an academic is living with rejection. It is horrible, but finding a way to fight through and keep apply, keep writing, keep fighting is the way to not get crushed.
For all you applying for grad school, use the down time to make your plans for what happens if you don't get in. Are there other programs, a job, an internship? Rejection is not the end, prepare to apply again!!! #advicefromareject#PhDchat#firstgen#PhDadvice
This is from a guy who lived through 8 rejection letters and had to find a way to brush it off. It hurt, but I found support and they made sure I got right back to work. The easiest way for elite spaces to keep you out is for you to quit trying to get in. #knockthefuckingdoordow
