Buzz’s Bedtime Stories: How a Late Night at Greg Norman’s Ended Clinton’s Jogging Days

1) When I worked for President Clinton, I would jog with him early in the morning. I was among a small cadre that included the doctor and the Secret Service jogging detail. I would run just behind the president as part of the Secret Service phalanx posted around him. We’d plod about three miles or so.

Through many a jogging morning, the president and I became informal and comfortable with each other.

These jogging sessions came to an abrupt end during the early morning of March 14, 1997. The president, senior staff, and I arrived at golfer Greg Norman’s compound at Hobe Sound, just outside of West Palm Beach, Florida, at about midnight.

The president had developed a friendship with Norman and was visiting to play in a three-day charity golf tournament.

Once we helicoptered in, the president dismissed the doctor and myself to our bungalow and some sleep after what had been a very long day. Clinton was ending the day with the Normans over a nightcap and would prepare for an early start in the golf tournament the next morning.

Just after one in the morning, I was startled awake by a Secret Service agent banging on my door, shouting, “Get up, get up, the president’s down!” The doctor and I looked at each other in shock, fearing the absolute worst. We jumped to our feet, and I threw on the closest clothing I could find-jogging shorts and shoes, a University of North Carolina T-shirt, and a blue blazer.

We ran out into Norman’s front yard and found the president sitting on the walkway, pants leg pulled above his knee, in obvious pain. “Buzz,” he said, “I think I hurt myself.” Major Bill Lang, the White House on-duty doctor and an officer in the US Army, looked him over. “Sir,” Bill said, “you’ve torn a tendon in your knee, and we need to get you to the hospital fairly quickly.”

I exposed the Islamic takeover of New Jersey. The mayor of Paterson has renamed his city "the capital of Palestine in America." Main Street is now Palestine Way. I went there to ask questions about what they truly want.

I'm kicked out of one of the biggest mosques in America within minutes of asking about a sheikh there who did a sermon for former Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh. I try to interview more people but most can't speak English. A man tells me "if you walk down Main Street it's like Ramallah."

The mayor has declared Paterson the sister city of Ramallah. The streets are empty at 1:30pm on a Friday because everyone is at the mosque.

💔 ROBERTS AND BARRETT JUST STABBED US IN THE BACK. AGAIN.

The Supreme Court ruled today in Watson v. RNC that states do not have to receive mail-in ballots by Election Day for them to count. Postmarked by Election Day is good enough. Your ballot can wander through the postal system for days after the polls close and still be counted.

And who wrote the majority opinion?

Amy Coney Barrett.

Who joined her?

John Roberts.

Along with Sotomayor, Kagan, and Jackson. The usual liberal bloc did what the usual liberal bloc does. But Barrett and Roberts had the power to stop this and chose not to.

This is not a surprise from Roberts at this point. But Barrett? This is the justice we were promised would be different. This is the justice we fought for. This is the justice who just handed the left exactly what they wanted on mail-in ballot integrity.

Five to four.

One vote.

That is the margin by which election integrity lost today.

Alito, Thomas, Gorsuch, and Kavanaugh dissented. Alito was scathing. He wrote that allowing ballots to pour in after Election Day, while preliminary results are already being reported publicly, creates greater opportunity for fraud and risks further destroying public confidence in our elections. He is right. He has always been right on this.

Here is what this means on the ground.

States can now set their own deadlines for when mail-in ballots must be received after Election Day. Mississippi had five days. Washington State has twenty-one days. Twenty-one days of ballots trickling in after you thought the election was over.

Think about what that looks like. Think about what that feels like to watch.

You know exactly what it feels like. We have all lived it.

Alito said it plainly in his dissent. When thousands of absentee ballots flow in after Election Day and potentially flip the result of an election, charges of a rigged election explode. He cited research showing that drawn-out ballot counting produces a large and significant decrease in Americans' trust in elections.
We did not need a study to tell us that.

The Save America Act, if passed, could address some of this going forward through Congress. But today's ruling makes clear that the legislative route is now the only route. The Court just took the judicial option off the table. Roberts and Barrett handed that decision to the same Congress where we are still fighting for a real majority.

Barrett and Roberts folded. Again.

Remember this the next time someone tells you that winning the White House is enough. It is not enough if the judges we are told to trust keep crossing the line when it matters most.

Personnel is policy. And today, our personnel failed us.
