Hinkley Point C, on the Somerset coast of the Bristol Channel, is the first of a new generation of nuclear power plants. The builders, EDF Energy, continue to show disregard for the fish kill potential of the plant by contesting a vital protection measure, the Acoustic Fish Deterrent (AFD), for nearly eight years. The Welsh Government Commission has warned that its absence could lead to the death of approximately 182 million fish annually. Now, an AFD Delivery Group has come together and offered a solutions based, scientifically backed report which proves the measure is both necessary and feasible. From a Welsh Government Report - Dr Peter Henderson, who has been involved in impingement research at Hinkley Point B (HPB), has calculated that the estimated annual capture rate (impingement) of the system will be over 182 million fish... many of these will not survive.

AFD systems are now available with Active Pressure Compensation Systems (APCS), particularly suited to the site at Hinkley Point C, where there are large tidal ranges.

In a study conducted at Hartlepool power station, AFD systems were monitored near a grey seal colony. Results showed no discernible effects on the seals, confirming the minimal threat posed by AFDs to marine mammals.
