Been that way for many years. The issue isn’t the players; they have the ability and personality to play that way, but they aren’t allowed to. They’re joystick-controlled, forced to stick to the coach’s game of chess.
Tonight’s Champions League final for me really solidifies an opinion I’ve had for a while.
Modern football has produced incredible systems, coaching, fitness and tactical organization.
But the elite players of previous generations were more capable of imposing their personality on a match regardless of the system around them.
The modern game produces better collective solutions and I have no doubts that teams are stronger than ever. However, the previous generations produced more individuals willing to create their own.
Players who took responsibility, changed the rhythm of matches and bent games to their will instead of waiting for the system to provide the answer.
Football evolved, the footballer didn’t.

@SerieASpotlight 💥. Milan are fragile, but Allegri takes the Blame for that more than most. 1 game a week, it was there for them to get top 4 as a minimum . Feel for Juve as under Spalletti they probably should have got it, but again slipped up. Gasperini ❤️❤️ , Como 👏
“Dov’è? Dov’èèè? Quel giornalista negativo che era sempre al centro di allenamento?”
“Andatelo a chiamare”
Poi arriva e De Zerbi gli sorride e gli stringe la mano 😂
They tried the Roma one, the chosen one and the special one amongst others. The false starts, through all the chaos & doubt Gasperini has led Roma back to the top table in his 1st season. 👏
@LillUrban No harm to Allegri & by all means i will judge him purely on what he does at Milan. I will also say Juve had their issues off the pitch to deal with too, but Juve 2.0 under him was devoid of ideas, patterns of play & full of deflection and excuses. It was painful to watch.
Talked up De Zerbi for too long now, but delighted he kept Spurs up. A club that should always be in the top flight of English football. Exciting times ahead under RDZ.
@gregthewellfan 👏 shortlist .
Possanzini with a bit more luck could have been managing in Serie A just now. Mantova had flaws, especially OOP,but he showed enough to suggest he’s got progressive ideas & a modern understanding of the game. Feels like he’d have a lot to offer in the right setup
