"Why does it take a diagnosis, a crisis, a detonation, before we let God do the work He’s been wanting to do all along? What if we started handing them over now, while we’re healthy, while there’s still time to live in the freedom that’s on the other side?"
A flawed and inadequate 2023 property tax assessment process in Jackson County that failed to comply with state law was further exacerbated by an appeals process that stacked the deck against taxpayers according to a new report from Auditor Fitzpatrick.

Thank you to the Cedar County Republican Central Committee for hosting an amazing Lincoln Day this week! @FitzpatrickMO, Lt. Gov Wasinger and I enjoyed visiting with everyone!
An audit prompted by numerous whistleblower complaints from residents concerned about the City of Arnold's possible misuse of two Transportation Development Districts (TDDs) has now confirmed citizens' fears as the final report from Auditor Fitzpatrick finds the city has operated in the shadows and the grey areas of the law to generate millions of dollars in tax revenue without voter approval, and then used the money to inappropriately fund city developments. The audit report gives the city and its TDDs the lowest possible rating of "poor" while finding numerous conflicts of interest, a lack of transparency, and an effort by the city to derail the audit process.
"The lack of cooperation from the city is on a level I have not seen during my time in office. I understand most political entities are not thrilled about being audited, but they also have a duty to cooperate with our office during the process and to be transparent and accountable to taxpayers. That is something city officials in Arnold seem to have forgotten as they have lost touch with what it means to be responsible stewards of taxpayer dollars. The people of Arnold should take considerable time to think about everything this audit has uncovered and what they want their city government to look like, and how they want it to act, going forward," said Auditor Fitzpatrick.

Auditor Fitzpatrick says the City of Desloge Municipal Division has made good progress to address the missing money uncovered by a 2024 audit and has taken important steps to prevent money from being stolen from the court in the future. Fitzpatrick released a follow-up report today that indicates court officials have implemented most of the recommendations from the previous audit that gave the court the lowest possible rating of "poor."
"There are very simple but very important steps any government can take to ensure an unscrupulous individual is not able to steal funds. Unfortunately, the City of Desloge Municipal Division did not have these controls and procedures in place to prevent nearly $4,000 from being stolen," said Auditor Fitzpatrick. "The good news is the court has now made significant progress to segregate duties, which is a key component to prevent one person from having the ability take money without anyone noticing. I applaud the court for taking this step and urge them to continue to fully implement all of the recommendations we made in our original audit."

I've been a proud Fitzpatrick my entire life and I don't make this change lightly, but government waste shouldn't get a pass just because nobody knows what to call me. As I try to bring the importance of our audit work into the public spotlight, the change to Fitz just fits.
In an effort to place more attention on the work done by his office and reduce confusion among members of the media who struggle to correctly identify him, the Missouri State Auditor announced today he will now be known simply as Fitz. The auditor formerly known as Scott Fitzpatrick said the change is necessary in large part because reporters from all parts of the state have regularly struggled to correctly pronounce his name beyond Fitz, commonly misidentifying him as Scott Fitzgerald.
"I have immense respect for the work the members of the media do to cover our audits and investigations, but it has become abundantly clear that correctly identifying me as Auditor Fitzpatrick is something that gives them fits. The switch to Fitz will allow me to spend less time correcting misprints and more time holding government accountable for every tax dollar," said Fitz.
