@TheaEuryphaessa This has become a pretty big topic for a lot of men I work with. I checked the book out and it looks like its from 2011, so I'm super curious how the hyper availability due to constant smart phone access would change the conclusions made at this point in time.
@Jameshhibbard I live in South MPLS. Not quite Bay Area, but have to imagine crossover of isolation and distraction applies. If I can get 10 guys to do this, that’s 10 guys who have SOME outlet for social relationships for the sake of it.
@Jameshhibbard This is a problem that I actually believe is worth addressing. Working to create a neighborhood men’s organization where we can have movement (without having it for purpose of competition) and social connection (as the primary purpose) to see how this could be done relationally.
@Jameshhibbard I was at a basketball game the other night, saw two friends attending together and between action they both ended up on their phones playing a candy crush game or updating sports bets. They were literally next to each other and couldn't be farther apart.
@Jameshhibbard Rise and grind! Hanging @ Elks Club, heading to weekly bowling league, running/biking for the SAKE of it, those dont get you respect and reward! When everything in life must be gamified to be engaged with, then the mundane act of simply being alive no longer appeals the same way.
Each person in a therapy room is unique in their story, their experience w/in that story, their identification w/ that story, & the role they play w/in it. Treating constructs, abstracts, & assigning group traits w/o seeing the person only perpetuates why they are there at all.
“We are treating individual human beings. Not constructs… not representatives of a group or demographic”
Exactly what professional organizations, practice guideline committees & too many training programs forget. As if there were a collective mission to erase the individual…
@TheaEuryphaessa I have been using that specific passage with some of the women in my life who seem perplexed why men around them come across certain ways. I think it has opened a few eyes, mine included.
@TheaEuryphaessa AHH THAT'S THE ONE IM READING NOW. Really resonating with the chapter on Eros and men's propensity to relate specific external pieces as their representation w/out developing a differentiated relationship of friends or hobbies, basically anything intuitive. Such a great book.
@tyra_elisabeth Was at that game and that was all that came to mind. Not being able to run an offense with any semblance of rhythm against the worst team in the NBA, purely unserious team at this point. Will enjoy our play in/1st rd series and pray the front office makes some real decisions

Turns out achieving financial/career success doesn’t ultimately lead to joy.
Having relationships open to vulnerability and acceptance, feeling a sense of working towards an idea bigger than you, and approaching life with psychological flexibility seems to do the trick, though.
@leonscafe31@PsychToday It's been great with clients (once I was able to get some), feeling my sense of the world get bigger with every session. Still adapting to the profession itself in a lot of ways, but the actual work/clinical writing has really been a gift.

Would love to see someone justify unattached burdens as a reason for dysfunction falling under scope of practice as defined above, not to mention violating patient autonomy (core ACA principal) implying this from perceived position of authority
@JulesEvans11 @karlsapp As a therapist, it would be reportable to our state board if I told a client that their issues stemmed from possession of an entity (certainly so if I didn’t have insanely extensive and clear IC on a framework that much outside of any demonstrable evidence).
