Heard yesterday after I explained what mattering is to someone hadn't heard of it:
"More & more people today feel like they don't matter. It's getting worse. People don't talk to each other. They look at their phones rather than the person in front of them or beside them."
I presented to QAIS educators 2 days ago. Great energy in the room; now this feedback about mattering's potential:
"I spoke with many heads & teachers. They were very excited about picking up on suggestions & activities for expressing mattering in formative & day-to-day routines"
From Psychologies, article written by Guillaume Servant
"If you never feel "good enough," these two words might be the ones you need to hear most."
The two words -- "I matter" @YorkUnews

This 2024 article (APA Monitor) is worth checking out if you haven't already. I was interviewed along with Tom Curran & Jennifer Wallace, among others. The bottom line -- too many kids are getting overwhelmed by perfectionism & the pressure it brings @apa

Turns out our neighbours in the woods have a
herd of goats & the grazing goats decided to visit while I was working outside at our cottage. Somehow a baby goat got under the fence, into our yard, so now I
can now add goat herder to my cv. An old goat lends a hand to a baby goat!
Worth re-posting. My chat on mattering with ABC Australia. The callers who shared their stories about not mattering provide a glimpse of how upsetting it can can be to feel unimportant to significant others. Take a pass on the bin discussion that follows

Saw this Psych Today blog on social media & mattering among children:

This the subject of a key chapter of my 2025 @apa book, published earlier. Here's the reference. The need to matter is at the core of social media addiction

On why not mattering to others is so painful:
"Failing to matter, especially to significant others and organizations in a person's life, is experienced as a profound rejection of the self in its entirety. Such a terrifying realization can hardly be borne."
--Gregory Elliott, 2009
Now accepted:
Lee, T-Y., Su, C., & Flett, G.L. (2026) Workplace mental health and social media addictive behaviours: The application of mattering theory. Canadian Journal of Nursing Research.
How important is mattering to older people? This open article from Egypt shows lower levels of mattering are very strongly correlated with loneliness (r= -.87) & depression (r = -.76). For some older people, the feeling of not mattering is the core problem

If interested, you can find the original Hidden Brain episode on mattering at the following link. It is the episode titled "Do You Feel Invisible?"

Had another great chat about mattering with Shankar Vedantam, host of @HiddenBrain. Listeners shared insightful comments, questions & personal stories. I learned that most contributions reflected anti-mattering & the ways we can feel invisible. If that's you, you are not alone!
Very glad to see this important Substack article on likes are not the same as mattering. My 2018 book is referenced, but the most extensive discussion of mattering & social media addiction in youth can be found in my 2025 book https://t.co/0hGaJOA5vT

Our new study shows a strong link in people working from home between anti-mattering & low WHO Well-Being Index scores. People who feel unimportant & invisible feel they lack a daily life filled with things that interest them & feel low in vigor & activity

Very glad to complete the hat trick today. Taping the 3rd segment with Shankar for the Hidden Brain podcast. Time to answer some of the many questions on mattering from listeners. Mattering has great resonance & continues to be of great interest. And nany people feel invisible.
We are thrilled to announce that Mattering as a Core Need in Children and Adolescents became a finalist for the 2026 PROSE Award in the psychology category!

From ABC Australia:
"The organization that embraces the concept of mattering is light years ahead. Whatever you put into it in terms of resources will come back in many positive ways in terms of less absenteeism, less turnover, greater engagement..."
