Salamanca was undoubtedly Wellington’s most impressive victory during the Peninsular War (and some might argue the masterpiece of his military career).

On this day in 1812, British, Portuguese and Spanish troops under the command of Sir Arthur Wellesley smash the French at the Battle of Salamanca. It's later said that the future Duke of Wellington "defeated an army of 40,000 men in 40 minutes."

@AstorJacob1 Wellington made it clear that of the Prussians didn't support him at Mont St Jean then he would retire to the fortified port of Antwerp. He could not risk his supply route being cut off hence his paranoia of his right being outflanked during the whole campaign.

On this day in 1982, HMS Conqueror returned to Faslane flying the Jolly Roger to signify a successful operation.

The flag featured an atom, crossed torpedoes and an outline of the ARA General Belgrano which she sunk on 2nd May 1982 with the loss of 323 lives.
