Thanks @UKFPO for showing prospective medical students that hard work will not be rewarded. I have a Biomedicine degree, won the award for top of the year and then studied Medicine and graduated this week with 2 awards for best in the year in 3rd year and final year.

@mstotty88 Thats why the system is flawed. If there’s always a ‘loser’ why should that be decided by chance. Why aren’t all professionals given their job in the same way? Should we change it so every job is given at random to someone who applies because their name was pulled out of the hat.

@mstotty88 Deciles played a huge role in the previous system and so i think being top decile would have made a difference to me. I think it is very unlikely that i would have been ranked 10000+ with my grades and additional points.

Ultimately, this ‘fair’ system has dealt me a very different hand. Please now tell me how this is ‘fair’.

I also ran an emergency medicine society and helped organise teaching events and helped organise a conference in emergency medicine.

My mum had a stroke during my 2nd year at medical school and multiple surgeries and so i was travelling to see her.

@Dazlaaaaa @owenmm2 @UKFPO @wesstreeting @TheBMA In the years prior to this the rank was based on your academic performance at medical school and performance in an external exam called the SJT. Therefore, those with higher ranks were achieved due to merit. This system changed this year to a random one.

@Dazlaaaaa @owenmm2 @UKFPO @wesstreeting @TheBMA We are then put into a computer system and allocated a ‘rank’ which generated by a computer system which is based on absolutely nothing. It is a lottery system. We do not know this rank until the end and have to preference blindly where we want to go.

After an undergrad in Durham & postgrad medical degree in which she gained several academic awards, my wife has been RANDOMLY ranked in the bottom 6% of UK med students. Off we go to another country away from our flat and my London-based job. Cheers @UKFPO @wesstreeting @TheBMA

Consistently top 10-20% of my year and won two prizes in 4th year, to be randomly allocated to the bottom of the entire UK. Fantastic new system @UKFPO, thank you for your well wishes for my future career

So here i am, sitting at home with my partner knowing that in 2 weeks time i’ll be moving away to wales alone. No support system and living in hospital accomodation at the age of 27 all because of a random rank i did not deserve.

As wales did not offer allocations to groups for placeholders initially, i had no idea where in wales i was going to be until this Job offer on the 20th June. This meant i could not find a place to live and it was too late for my partner to make arrangements to move.

With only 6 weeks notice, my partner of 9 years can now no longer move with me as he has a mortgage and work commitments that he was unable to sort out with short notice. I now have to move to wales on my own with no support system in order to start my career.

As a result of this random ranking i have been allocated my 12th/18th choice which was Wales. Following on from this i was given a placeholder position and did not receive a job offer until June 20th 2024.
