@viet_t_nguyen Also, I think Miss Saigon really perverts the story of Madame Butterfly because Chris is portrayed as a good guy who looks for & takes care of his child. In Madame Butterfly, the American is a callous jerk who throws Butterfly away and grabs the child on a whim.

@viet_t_nguyen Not saying that Kipling was an anti-colonist progressive, just that the point of this particular poem doesn't actually re-enforce the stereotype of the weak Asian, or fundamental incompatibility. I wish the poem was read more in its entirety & interpreted differently.

@viet_t_nguyen The poem tells the story of a strong Asian man and a strong British man recognizing that as individuals they are equals, even if the power of the British as colonizers gives the British man more social power.
