As a rower, she won three Olympic gold (including two in 1992) and a silver with her rowing partner Marnie McBean. They were the first Canadians to win three gold medals at the Summer Games. She is in Canada's Sports Hall of Fame.
Jean Chrétien served as the 20th Prime Minister of Canada.
In office from 1993 to 2003, he won three majority governments and had a long political career that dated back to the 1960s.

On this day in 1922, 14-year-old Leonard Thompson of Toronto became the first person to receive an injection of insulin as a treatment for type 1 diabetes thanks to the work of Frederick Banting, Charles Best, James Collip and J.J.R. Macleod.
Thompson died in 1935 of pneumonia.

On this day in 1860, Sir Charles G.D. Roberts was born in Douglas, New Brunswick. One of the first Canadian authors to achieve international recognition, he is considered to be one of Canada's Confederation Poets. He wrote 17 books of poetry and 43 fiction stories/books.
