3-4% of flights canceled in 2026 through March making air travel the most unreliable since 2022 when airlines caught without personnel or planes coming out of COVID.
Airlines using promotion of sales of free air travel to credit card companies to replace lost revenue. But as inflation rises, more stress on airlines near certainty.
With travel costs up 17% from last year, most families with incomes under $100,000 forgoing traditional summer vacations with paid lodging. With air travel big part of summer vacations, passengers may forgo air travel where possible and take vacations closer of home.
Withdrawing Federal customs and immigration personnel from airports in sanctuary states could have major effects on international air travel including
Longer lines for incoming foreign travelers and shifting international flights away from NY, IL, MA and CA

Inconveniencing passengers, federal workers and airlines while threatening airport revenues at some blue state airports
As aviation terrorism remains the most deadly form and Iran war continues with threats increasing, Iran leaders promise a “surprise”. Drones attacks in US? Airport mass shootings? Attacks on mass gatherings? Bombings? Poisonings? Hopefully US intelligence will be connecting the dots unlike what happened before 9/11.
The Trump Administration under former Homeland Security Dept. Secretary Kristi Noem disbanded the TSA Aviation Security Advisory Committee. This needs to be reconstituted with at least one member that truly represents passengers, not just corporate interests, labor unions and government agencies. Weak or incompetent security primarily puts passengers at risk, while unnecessary, overly intrusive or arbitrary TSA measures can both annoy passengers and waste funding.
As is sometimes said of the Aviation Trust
Fund paid for by passenger ticket taxes, there is actually no trust and no fund. Tax revenue regardless of its stated purpose is ultimately subject to the will of Congress, which may divert or supplement revenues technically dedicated to a specific purpose.
FlyersRights believes there should be a forensic audit of both aviation ticket taxes and the security tax to see where the billions in revenue are going and how they are being spent. The US is under heightened terrorist threats as well as air safety challenges.
To fill the shortage of 2,000+ air traffic controllers, FAA has enrolled 3,000+ trainees. But with an 80% washout rate and 3-5 years to become fully qualified does not solve the problem. FlyersRights suggestions for transfers with higher pay, age changes for training and retirement, work visas for already qualified controllers to NYC, DCA and Chicago could provide timely relief, improve safety and reduce delays.
FAA has called for 10% flight reductions at 40 congested airports for 5 months starting May 17 to reduce flight delays this summer. Sounds good but https://t.co/ZpCls9R7Ah questions will it result in higher airfares, more cancellations not currently counted as delays and will airlines actually comply with FAA lax enforcement policies?
Good explanation of how fortress hub airports are used by big airlines to defeat competition. https://t.co/SSvdMvwVrF has long advocated for common gates to prevent big airlines from monopolizing access.
CDC has banned non US travelers from Uganda, Democratic Republic of the Congo and S Sudan from entering the US for 30 days due to an outbreak of Ebola, a highly infectious disease with a 25-50% death rate. Any US citizens would be admitted but may have to be quarantined for up to 30 days.
