The Football Players statue was dedicated on May 12, 1900. The work of Cal alum Douglas Tilden, it won awards in Paris. SF Mayor J.D. Phelan bought it in 1898 as a prize for the winner of 2 of the next 3 Big Games. The names of the winning teams' starters are carved on the base.
