@creation247 Similar story with meters vs feet, 10 is terrible to work with in practice because it only divides in half and into fifths; 12 is great because it is divisible by 2,3, and 4 so can easily divide up into commonly used proportions. An inch is a reasonable human unit of “small”.
@PashaKamyshev Interesting, had to look up deontology! I suppose a pure utilitarian would say the rules serve some long term or perhaps subjective utility? Otherwise where do the rules come from? If they just evolved they aren’t really rules in the sense of absolutes.
@PashaKamyshev Ian Banks’ The Algebraist has some interesting exploration of the idea of elite selection. Looking forward to seeing how you engage these problems!
@PashaKamyshev The truth of these things tends to trickle out slowly over several decades so by the time the full story is out it’s old news and no one is paying attention anymore. We never get the reckoning. Maybe Trump has different plans though, we’ll see.
@PashaKamyshev It does seem like a more rigorous study of the dynamics of “consensus algorithms” is needed. Probably lots of work out there but needs to be synthesized.
@PashaKamyshev Sounds interesting, will check it out. Alastair Reynolds’ Revelation Space series deals with some of these themes and also sticks to sub light travel. I really appreciate that you stuck with sub light, restrictions improve the art. Maybe invest in better cover art though
@bard_buttercup Most likely is SPS convert to common and possibly JPS are converted as well. Depending on valuation this could amount to a small haircut for both but it puts them very close to meeting the capital requirements. Could happen anytime, but I’m starting to think after midterms.
@MaccabiBetter @F2commonSense@BillAckman I’m no expert but it seems like all those companies are still controlled by their shareholders and managed for shareholder interests, but Fannie and Freddie are managed by FHFA for the benefit of FHFA and the public at large. Seems like a fundamental conflict not a technical one.
@BillAckman Hi Bill, I don’t think Fannie and Freddie would meet NYSE standards for governance while in conservatorship since HERA and SCOTUS agree that FHFA as conservator is explicitly not accountable to shareholders.
