When it comes to extreme weather, hurricanes and tornadoes seem to get the most attention. Hail tends to fly under the radar, literally and metaphorically.
Yet hailstorms total cars, destroy roofs, and devastate crops, costing the U.S. $46 billion in 2023 alone. (1/2)
After extensive NWS storm surveys & post analysis, NWS Miami can now confirm *15* tornadoes occurred across South Florida on Oct 9th, 2024 associated with the outer bands of Hurricane #Milton.

Just as predicted. Hurricanes Helene and Milton have stirred up nitrogen rich cool waters from deep down (called "cool water upwelling") that is now causing widepread algal blooms of this neurotoxin. This one is particularly bad for humans and deadly for many sea animals. I expect to see lots of dead fish washing ashore soon if not already. These are the long term effects of tropical cyclones traversing that area.
It’s International Shakeout Day!
This day is recognized on the 3rd Thurs. of Oct. each year to educate the public about the importance of taking immediate action in case of an earthquake.
At 10:17am local time, join millions of people practicing earthquake safety!

Oftentimes the cyclone’s strongest winds are not located exactly at the center of the cyclone, so it is possible that the strongest winds are already being experienced over land before landfall officially occurs. (2/2)
Weather word of the week: landfall.
A hurricane does not officially make landfall until the center of the tropical cyclone intersects with a coastline. (1/2)
