Charles Lightoller was Titanic’s second officer. At the time, he lived on Station Road in Netley.

He survived Titanic and was twice decorated for gallantry (Royal Navy) in WW1.

In 1940, he rescued 120-130 men from Dunkirk in his yacht. Sadly, two of his sons were killed in WW2.

2 February 1915. Raid on the Suez Canal. The defeat of the German-led Ottoman Army force from Southern Palestine who were attacking the British Empire-protected Suez Canal.

2 February 1916. LZ 54 (L19), a P-class military Zeppelin was destroyed. With 3 of 4 engines failing it came under Dutch fire and sank in the North Sea. Her crew survived the crash, but drowned after British fishing vessel King Stephen's crew refused to rescue.

On this day in 1890, 300 Lakota Sioux are massacred by Federal troops at Wounded Knee, South Dakota. More than 20 Medals of Honor are awarded to soldiers who took part in the slaughter.
