A direct jump to 5% capital risk on your model might be aggressive, but a phased increase (e.g., 3.5% → 4% → 4.5%) can help assess the impact without overexposing capital.
In our kick off episode, we seek to break down electronic tax invoicing in Kenya with David Busaule (@DBusaule)
A 🧵
We started off with a historical perspective. It dates back to the manual Electronic Tax Registers rolled out in 2003
I find this El Niño phenomenon very interesting. Kwa hivyo, El Niño si mvua tu, kuna jua pia. Whenever it rains heavily in EA, there is drought in SA. Kukinyesha Eastern China, kunakuwa na joto India na Indonesia. US mvua, Brazil jua. A combination of both apparently?
So, the helicopter carrying Wicknell Chivayo was an AgustaWestland AW139.
I started digging into this particular model and something caught my attention. 1/2
The Odyssey of VAT Administration & Electronic Invoicing in Kenya 🇰🇪
If you joined the tax conversation during the eTIMS era, you might think VAT administration and electronic invoicing started with eTIMS.
But wapi. 😎
Kenya has been on this journey for decades.
Before VAT, Kenya had Sales Tax

VAT — 1990

Manual VAT & VAT 3

ETR — 2005

iTax

Auto-Populated VAT
Then came VAT in 1990, replacing the Sales Tax regime.
And for many years, VAT administration was largely a manual affair.
Paper invoices.
Manual records.
VAT ledgers.
Manual reconciliations.
And, of course, the VAT 3 return.
The taxpayer prepared the numbers, completed the return and told KRA:
“Hii ndio VAT yangu.”
Then technology started changing the game.
ETR came in 2005.
For the first time, electronic tax registers brought transaction recording into the VAT administration environment.
But recording a transaction electronically was only one step.
Then came iTax, moving VAT filing and administration from paper into an electronic environment.
Then came TIMS.
Now the conversation was changing.
It was no longer just:
“Have you recorded the transaction?”
It increasingly became:
“Has the transaction been transmitted to KRA?”
Then came eTIMS.
And electronic invoicing moved beyond the traditional ETR environment into a broader ecosystem of software, mobile and system-to-system solutions.
Then came another major shift:
Auto-populated VAT returns.
Now KRA can increasingly use transaction information already available through systems such as eTIMS and customs systems to populate VAT return information.
So the journey looks something like this:
The Odyssey continues. 🇰🇪
What if you could skip the guesswork when house hunting?
Fake listings, costly searches and limited transparency remain major frustrations for Nairobi renters, according to Reemio Head of Business Njoki Kimani.
Reemio’s platform connects renters with verified landlords, allowing them to browse properties and get more information before making a physical visit.
In a market where a fake listing can cost you money, verification matters.

Goldman: Americans aren't invested in gold.
Americans have just a 0.18% portfolio allocation to gold.
Goldman estimates that every additional 0.01% allocation to gold would increase the gold price by roughly 1.4%.
That's a 140× price multiplier.
We are still early.
Important piece! For example, I would advise all devs to familiarise themselves with the Kenya Data Protection Act and court cases around it. One wrong move and you are in deep trouble
$EURUSD: Short‑term price action continues to show downside pressure. We should wait for a clear reversal before considering long positions. A break below 1.1324 would confirm a deeper corrective move.
