The Kingdom of Zimbabwe (A.K.A Great Zimbabwe) was one of the great African Empires. The kingdom existed from 1220 to 1450. The region of Zimbabwe was settled in the eleventh century, but the Kingdom was fully set up in the thirteenth century.
The Great Zimbabwe has the largest of stone-built ruins. It consists of 12 clusters of buildings, that spread over 3 square miles. Its outer walls were built from 100,000 tons of granite bricks.

Ernest Rutherford, born #OTD, discovered alpha and beta radiation, postulated the concept of the nucleus and founded the field of nuclear physics. Regarded as one of the greatest experimentalists, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1908.
