Coach Simpson leaves behind a legacy at MBA as the wrestling program was turned over to his son in 2020. During his 25 year stretch as head coach before that though, the Big Red won several region championships and placed as high as second in the state in 1998.

Outside of wrestling, Simpson coached JV soccer and freshman football with his team in the 9th grade city championship four straight seasons, winning in 1997. He has also served the school in roles that include Chairman of the Discipline Committee, Demerit Coordinator and Assistant Athletic Director.

“Obviously wrestling's been my expertise and it's just working with the kids and seeing the kids grow,” Simpson previously told the TSSAA. “Most of the kids that I get have never wrestled before and my philosophy in coaching has always been to not build just wrestlers but build men of good character.

"A lot of people have asked me who's your most successful wrestler, and it's not always the state champions and guys who achieve the most on the mat. It's what I see in them 10, 15, 20 years down the road, good family men, married with children and doing a good job. That's what I consider success."

Simpson was named the Middle Tennessee Wrestling Coach of the Year in 1996, 2003, and 2006.  He has been inducted into the Tennessee Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2006 and inducted into the Middle Tennessee Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2012.

A pair of junior school wrestlers, both 7th graders, won Tennessee AAU Middle School State Championships this past weekend.
