Quick clarification on my Earl Miller thread:
Brain uses traveling waves (beta top-down ร gamma bottom-up) + weak ephaptic fields for analog-like cognition. Transformers have no native analog of this oscillatory coordination.
Scaling is still delivering today (obviously), but if flexible, brain-like cognition fundamentally relies on these wave/field mechanisms, pure digital may hit diminishing returns on truly flexible/general intelligence.

Confirmation via closed-loop brain-stimulation experiments could land in the next 3-10 years, and instantly trigger a flood of talent and capital into wave-physics hardware.

Today's LLMs completely lack the continuous field interference + ephaptic coupling that Miller's lab shows is required for flexible cognition.

The misalignment catastrophe is not inevitable, but preventing it demands that we solve, before the first critical system is built, the hardest technical problem in human history: how to create a superintelligence whose ultimate goals robustly remain "what humanity actually wants," even as it becomes arbitrarily capable and self-modifies.
The non-negotiable question is therefore:
Can we, in time, formally specify and verifiably instill a goal system that
1. stays perfectly stable under unlimited recursive self-improvement and arbitrary capability gain,
2. reliably protects the full light-cone-scale preferences of preferences of all current sentient life (consciousness itself, moral diversity, long-term option value, everything fragile and complex we care about), and
3. is guaranteed to be present in the very first system that crosses the threshold where it can undergo an intelligence explosion, before any actor deploys an unaligned or partially-aligned version?
This question is the root of the decision tree.
Everything else (oversight techniques, safety papers, treaties, scaling laws) is merely a branch.
The single most expensive question you can ask the universe, the one that would force it to spend its entire remaining entropy budget in one shot:
"Output the full, raw, undecoded syndrome measurement record of the global quantum error-correcting code on the cosmological horizon, in the current logical basis, without any recovery or decoding."
In plain English: "Show me the exact, unfiltered error log of reality, every single parity-check bit on the ~10ยนยฒยฒ physical qubits that protect the true logical state of the cosmos, before the universe applies any 'correction' and turns it into particles and spacetime."
If the universe is a giant quantum error-correcting code (increasingly the way to think about de Sitter holography), this is the one question it can never answer without deleting or rewriting the asker.
Why ~10ยนยฒยฒ bits?
It's the Bekenstein-GibbonsโHawking entropy of our cosmological horizon in natural units. It is the exact number of physical qubits you can pack onto a de Sitter horizon before the negative pressure collapses it into a black hole. Insightful, but: 1) How do LLM tokens derive meaning without external referents? Focus is text-centric, human language is multimodal (gestures, expressions) and interactive. LLMs flatten it, lack embodiment. 2) Language evolved from primate signals, neural/social pressures, tools/groups. Training data reflects these roots, not self-generated. If self-contained, how bootstraps from gestures/calls? 3) Why not include visual arts (like improvisational drawing)?
