The cruel irony is that Oleksii Yukov was killed by a landmine while recovering the remains of Russian soldiers.

He often said that every fallen soldier deserved to come home. He called them “souls,” not bodies. His mission was to bring Ukraine’s defenders back to their families for a proper burial. He also recovered Russian soldiers so they could be exchanged, allowing more Ukrainian heroes to return home.

His death is an immeasurable loss for Ukraine. And, whether they realize it or not, it is also a loss for Russia. The very people celebrating his death are cheering the loss of someone who helped ensure their own dead did not remain abandoned on a battlefield.

Oleksii believed that every family deserved the chance to bury their loved ones. He lived by that principle until his very last day. Ukraine lost an extraordinary man.

Today we were shaken by heartbreaking news—Oleksii Yukov was killed on the front line. He dedicated his life to those whom war had forever taken from their families. He did everything possible to ensure that every fallen defender and civilian could return home one last time, allowing every family the chance to say a proper farewell to their loved one.

Oleksii's death was announced by his wife, Yevheniia, and Ukrainian serviceman Serhii Hnizdilov.

According to Hnizdilov, Oleksii sustained his fatal wound while carrying out the exhumation of bodies near the front line.

Long before Russia's aggression began, before 2014, Oleksii Yukov devoted himself to locating and giving proper burials to soldiers of World War II. Later, his mission became even more important—searching for fallen Ukrainian soldiers and civilians and returning them to their families.

Under his leadership, the search organization "Platsdarm" brought nearly 2,000 bodies home. Behind every one of those numbers was a human life and a family given the chance to lay their loved one to rest with dignity.

His path was filled with deadly risks. In May 2014, as fierce fighting raged near Sloviansk, Oleksii's team set out to recover the bodies of Ukrainian soldiers after two helicopters had been shot down. During the mission, however, the search team was captured by militants led by Igor Girkin. Oleksii survived brutal captivity and miraculously made it out alive.

Even after Russia's full-scale invasion began, he never abandoned his mission. Despite constant shelling, minefields, and the risk to his own life, Oleksii continued his work so that Ukrainian families could bring their fallen loved ones home and give them a dignified farewell.

Today we bow our heads in honor of his sacrifice. We thank him for his dedication, resilience, selflessness, and for carrying out a task that is beyond measure and that very few people have the strength to do.

May Oleksii Yukov's memory be eternal.

They have a word for every form of resistance.

If you fight with weapons, you are a terrorist.

If you fight with boycotts, you are antisemitic.

If you fight with words, you are spreading hate.

If you fight with international law, you are politicizing the courts.

If you document the casualties, you are spreading propaganda.

If you mourn publicly, you are inciting violence.

If you survive and refuse to be silent about surviving, you are a threat to stability.

There is no form of resistance they will permit.

Because the point was never to find a form of resistance they could accept.

The point was to make resistance itself the crime, so that the original violence, the violence that created the conditions requiring resistance, could be discussed, if at all, as an unfortunate but necessary background detail.

The trick is not complicated.

It just requires everyone to look at the resistance and never at what produced it.

They have spent centuries perfecting the art of controlling where you look.

In the 2000s it was Islamic terrorism and you were told to be afraid of your neighbor on the airplane and to accept surveillance as safety.

In the 2020s it was the other political party, upgraded to existential threat, fascists, communists, destroyers of democracy, depending on which channel you watched.

Notice what is never the enemy.

The hedge fund manager who bought your neighborhood and raised your rent 40 percent is never the enemy.

The pharmaceutical executive who priced insulin at a level that makes rationing a survival strategy for American diabetics is never the enemy.

The defense contractor CEO who has budgeted for cost overruns as a profit mechanism and built political protection into every congressional district where a factory or base exists is never the enemy.

The private equity firm that bought the hospital, extracted its capital, laid off the nurses, and left the community without emergency services is never the enemy.

They are never on the screen.

They are never the face you're shown when you're told to be angry.

They are never the subject of the prime time segment.

They are the people who own the screen.

The enemy is always someone who looks like the person next to you.

Always someone who can be found in your neighborhood, your workplace, your family dinner.

Never someone who can be found on the Forbes list, the Davos guest list, the Epstein flight manifest.

This is not accidental.

This is the product.

This is what the media is for.
