The 1988 Paris-Dakar Rally remains one of the most bizarre and controversial chapters in motorsport history, primarily due to the "disappearance" of Ari Vatanen’s car while he was leading the event.

Ari Vatanen, the defending champion, was dominating the rally in his Peugeot 405 T16. By the time the race reached Bamako, Mali, he held a commanding lead of nearly two hours. However, on the morning of January the 18th, the unthinkable happened as the car was stolen from the service park.

Shortly after the car vanished, a ransom demand was reportedly delivered to the Peugeot team boss, Jean Todt. The thieves allegedly demanded 25 million CFA francs (roughly £80,000 at the time) for the return of the vehicle.

The car was eventually found abandoned in a field a few hours later, but the delay was catastrophic. Under the strict rules of the rally, a car must be at the starting line within a specific time window.

The crew were initially allowed to start the stage late once the car was recovered, but he was later disqualified for failing to start on time.

The 1988 "stolen car" incident sparked numerous conspiracy theories. Some believed it was a rival team’s sabotage, while others suspected a local criminal element.

As you can see the horrendous accident in 1985 certainly didn’t slow Ari down 🤯
