Anglicanism as a Reformed Catholic Tradition Rather than Pan-Protestantism

Although Anglicanism is one of the historic Protestant traditions, it is not synonymous with pan-Protestantism—the broad family of evangelical, free church, Reformed, and restorationist movements such as Baptists, Presbyterians, Methodists, the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Churches of Christ, many non-denominational churches, and those Lutheran churches that do not maintain the historic episcopate.

Rather than understanding itself as a new church founded during the Reformation, Anglicanism has historically claimed to be the reformed continuation of the ancient Church in England. This self-understanding is reflected in the Thirty-Nine Articles, which define the Church as "the visible Church of Christ" where "the pure Word of God is preached, and the Sacraments be duly ministered according to Christ's ordinance" (Article XIX), while simultaneously rejecting specific medieval Roman doctrines rather than the catholic tradition itself.

Consequently, Anglicanism has frequently been described in academic ecclesiology as a reformed catholic tradition: Protestant in its commitment to the principles of the English Reformation, yet catholic in its continuity with the historic episcopate, the ecumenical creeds, the sacramental life, and the liturgical heritage of the early Church.

Unlike most Baptist, Presbyterian, Methodist, Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Churches of Christ, non-denominational traditions, and Lutheran churches that do not retain the historic episcopate—which generally identify themselves as denominations or ecclesial traditions that emerged during or after the Reformation—Anglicanism has consistently maintained its identity as a reformed branch of the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church.

As the Roman Catholic theologian Yves Congar observed, Anglicanism has understood itself as "at once Catholic while non-Roman, Reformed while non-Protestant," highlighting its distinctive ecclesial identity. For this reason, Anglicanism is best understood not as a generic expression of Protestantism, but as a historic Protestant communion that consciously preserves both Reformation theology and continuity with the historic catholic (universal) Church.
