To all those saying that keeping our environment clean is our responsibility, I fully agree with you, and it’s something I have always said. It is indeed our collective duty. But blaming the citizens alone is a shallow, primitive way of looking at things. Why is our sewer system broken, with open drains everywhere? 11.Have you seen the state of our roads and the storm water gutters left wide open? 12. Why don’t we have clean public toilets at strategic locations around the city 13.why don’t we have proper bus stops and stages for PSVs We can keep shifting blame to KURA, KENHA and even the citizens, but whose job is it to work with those agencies? The county government! Why is enforcement missing, and why are there no hefty fines for offenders? The truth is, for any city or country to function, it starts with enforcing the law. Citizens in Europe, the UAE, Kigali, Addis, Rabat or Cape Town are no different from us, but there the law is enforced, and people have no choice but to obey. Here, laws are selective, applied only when convenient, and it has bred a culture of corruption, incompetence, and mediocrity. If you are comfortable with mediocrity and low standards, that’s your choice. But do not impose it on those of us with standards and a low tolerance for stupidity. Some of us already pay private companies for garbage collection, we segregate our waste, we even bag our pets poop, and when we speak, we do so not just for ourselves, but for every Nairobi resident. It is shameful that the ordinary mwananchi must wade through sewage, dodge open manholes, walk on heaps of rubbish, gamble daily with unsafe public transport and lawless roads. But we don’t like to talk about the hard facts. Some of you are stuck in bubbles, others are simply tired and voiceless. And to the 527/- gang. I’ve said this before: I understand your broke, desperate situation. But try and earn in a dignified way, and learn to play in your own league. Because one day, you may walk into the wrong league and meet the wrong number. As usual, like every Sunday, Gucci and I have put together a thread of pictures to show you exactly why we keep saying Nairobi is a slum, and why we must fix Nairobi. We really need to call out the leadership for cheap, childish and nonsensical theatrics that make our city look like a circus. The clown TikTok1 needs to understand his job and stop this nonsense.
