The image depicts two graves located in separate graveyards in Roermond, Netherlands, dating back to 1880. The reason for this separation is that Jacob Werners Constantinus van Gorcum, the husband, was a Protestant, while Lady Josephina Carolina Petronella Hubertina van Aefferden, the wife, was a Catholic. Consequently, religious differences prevented them from being buried in the same cemetery.
Jacob and Josephina tied the knot in 1842 when Jacob was 33 years old and Josephina was 22. The couple enjoyed a marital union that spanned 38 years. Following Jacob's demise in 1880, he was interred adjacent to a wall. Upon Josephina's passing in 1888, she expressed her wish to be laid to rest not in her family's burial site but alongside her husband, adjacent to the same wall. Their individual headstones serve as a poignant testament to their enduring love and shared destiny.
