Lena Baker’s story is one of the most painful chapters in the history of racial injustice in Jim Crow Georgia. Born in 1900, Baker was a Black mother of three who supported her family through domestic work, laundry, farm labor, and whatever work she could find. In 1944, she was hired to care for Ernest B. Knight, a white gristmill owner recovering from an injury. According to Baker’s testimony, Knight began locking her inside the mill, preventing her from leaving. On April 29, 1944, Baker said Knight confronted her with an iron bar when she tried to leave, and during the struggle over a pistol, Knight was shot and killed. Baker immediately reported what had happened.
Her trial lasted less than a day. An all-white jury convicted her of murder and sentenced her to death. Baker maintained that she had acted in self-defense, but her account did not prevent the death sentence. She was executed in Georgia’s electric chair on March 5, 1945, at the age of 44, becoming the first and only woman to be executed in Georgia’s electric chair. Her final statement continued to insist that she had acted to save her own life. Decades later, in August 2005, Georgia’s Board of Pardons and Paroles granted Baker a posthumous pardon, acknowledging that denying her clemency in 1945 had been a “grievous error.” The Board did not declare her innocent, but stated that the circumstances warranted mercy and that she could have been charged with the lesser offense of voluntary manslaughter, which would not have resulted in a capital sentence.
Lena Baker’s history is important because it shows how the legal system of Jim Crow operated in the lives of ordinary Black people, particularly Black women who had little social or political power. Her case also reminds us why historical stories need to be told with the evidence intact. Baker was convicted of killing Knight, but she consistently described the shooting as self-defense, and the state eventually acknowledged that the handling of her case and denial of clemency were seriously flawed. Her name should therefore be remembered not simply as the woman Georgia executed, but as a mother whose testimony about her own survival was recorded, ignored, and only revisited six decades later.
