Statement from Oscar-winning director Hamdan Ballal:
This afternoon, nearly a year after we won the Oscar, the same settler who attacked me shortly after I returned from Los Angeles--Shem Tov Lusky--again led an attack against my home and my family. Four of my family members are currently arrested and one is in the hospital.
I invite all journalists and diplomats to come visit me and my family this Tuesday, February 17, to hear about how the situation has gotten worse in the year since we won the Oscar, as it has across the West Bank. Email me to coordinate your visit: [email protected]
Two weeks ago we managed to get a decision from the Israeli court that the area around my home is closed to non-residents, but the settlers break that order and still come with their flocks almost every day.
We call the police, they do nothing. The army comes, they do nothing. Today, Shem Tov Lusky--the settler who attacked me in my home shortly after I won the Oscar last year--came with his flock to my home. My brother called the police to report the incursion. The army came first and immediately raided our house, attacking everyone inside. Then they arrested two of my brothers, a nephew, and cousin. Another brother was badly injured and is now in the hospital.
The Israeli court decision was supposed to make things a bit quieter for us. But the opposite has been true. The settlers have ramped up their harassment and the Israeli authorities have done nothing to enforce the decision, and today they joined the settlers in the attack.
15% of the population of Ireland entered the US between 1851 and 1860
9% of the population of Norway entered the US in the 1880s
6% of the population of Italy entered the US from about 1900-1910
This is appalling. A 79-year-old sought asylum last year, and has been detained ever since. Without adequate medical care, her mental health has deteriorated badly enough that she doesn’t even recognize her daughter anymore.
The ministers that have spread disinformation must act beyond merely deleting their comments on social media – as some have done. They must publicly apologize and retract any calls for @FranceskAlbs resignation.
This RIGHT HERE is the WORST THING about the SAVE Act.
You could be WRONGLY purged from the voting rolls AFTER it is too late to re-register.
This WILL happen to some.
WATCH THIS.
Repost it.
Steal it if you want.
The important thing is this truth NEEDS to be shared.
Accepted forms of ID to vote under the SAVE Act:
1. Enhanced REAL ID: Only available in 5 states. Costs up to $50 and requires a birth certificate which 40M Americans lack access to.
2. Valid passport: 146M Americans do not have and costs at least $130. Trump gutted the agencies issuing them.
3. U.S. military ID card presented with military record of service.
4. Government-issued photo ID showing place of birth: 300M Americans do not have one, and costs up to $50.
5. Non-Enhanced REAL ID driver’s license, state ID, or tribal ID shown in conjunction with a birth certificate (40M lack access to) that matches your last name (which 69M women do not have due to marriage) and other forms of documentation.
Ironically, the states the SAVE Act hurts the most: West Virginia, Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas.
If the SAVE Act was actually a Voter ID bill, then it would propose making the validate forms of ID free and easily accessible, bringing it in line with the 24th Amendment.
Until then, it’s just another Republican voter suppression bill, that makes registering to vote, voting, and ensuring your voting status harder.
There is no easier or more important political position to take than to do everything possible to stop this. It will change our society forever, and Democrats are going along with it.
Only deeply sick societies spend obscene amounts on chains, cages, walls, and all-seeing cameras as opposed to stuff that fosters beauty, joy, health, people who can think, and a natural world capable of sustaining it all.
“Mass migration … destabilizes societies across the West,” says direct beneficiary of mass migration.
This is indistinguishable from parody.
Marco Rubio is a great counterpoint to the very arguments he is now making.
Defunding the building of these “detention centers” should be a central demand from Dems. ICE is deeply unpopular and this price tag is objectively obscene. But the consultancy braintrust determined any demand for “defunding” was taboo so its body cams and redundant legal tweaks
WHOA. The Trump admin is fully singling out an ethnic group for different treatment.
Hundreds of Somalians in immigration court around the nation have suddenly had their cases rescheduled and put in front of the same Louisiana immigration judge who denied bond to Rümeysa Öztürk.
Republicans have been getting walloped in special elections all year, so they want to make it damn near impossible to vote!
I will be voting NO and urge every one of my colleagues to do the same.
Reminder that by late last year, even @AnnCoulter judged that “this is the most corrupt presidency in U.S. history…It is so blatant, it’s right in front of our eyes,” and @Cernovich noted: “During recent visit in DC, the talk of everyone was how overt the corruption was. It's at levels you read about in history books. In nearly every department.”
The DOJ is giving Members of Congress just four computers in a satellite office to read the unredacted Epstein File of more than 3 million documents. Working 40 hours a week on nothing else but this, it would take more than seven years for the 217 Members who signed the House discharge petition to read just the documents they've decided to release (and there are 3 million still being withheld).
This is what a cover up looks like.
One way to judge a society's investments to ask: "what kinds of people and relationships will it create?" Sit with this question. Investment in repressive bureaucracies has become so normalized that we are desensitized to how far away from the best parts of humanity it takes us.
