This ingredient does more than almost anything you can buy:

Antacid drink for heartburn and indigestion. A quarter teaspoon in 8 ounces of water.

Toothpaste. Straight or mixed with a bit of coconut oil. Neutralizes acids and freshens breath.

No-shampoo hair wash. Removes buildup and gently cleans without stripping natural oils.

Itch relief for bug bites, rashes, and skin irritation. Paste of soda and water applied directly.

You already know what it is. Baking soda. Sodium bicarbonate. The single most versatile multi tool compound on the planet, and one of the cheapest.

A few things worth knowing:

Baking soda has more recipes in the upcoming chemical compounds book than any other single compound. Over 30 compounds covered and this one wins by volume of uses.

Store it in an airtight container. It absorbs moisture and clumps, which doesn't ruin it but makes it harder to work with.

Baking powder and baking soda are not the same. Baking powder contains baking soda plus an acid and a starch. Baking soda alone is what does the heavy lifting for prep uses.

Test yours periodically. Drop a pinch in vinegar. Strong fizz means it's still active. Weak fizz means it's absorbed too much moisture and needs replacing.

Buy in bulk. It's cheap and lasts effectively forever when sealed dry.
