It’s sad that only four Black women have ever won Album of the Year at the Grammys. I’m glad Beyoncé won because she ended a 26-year gap since Lauryn Hill’s victory and finally added another Black woman to a list that should be much longer. Albums like Donna Summer’s Bad Girls, Janet Jackson’s Rhythm Nation 1814, and many other era-defining works by Black women also reshaped popular music, yet never received the Academy’s top prize.

Just because of the color of her skin.
A six-year-old child realizing an entire country was angry at her for existing.
