My statement:

The 78-year-old Jimmy Lai being sentenced to 20 years in prison by a Hong Kong court is both heartbreaking and infuriating. It is blatantly clear that the Beijing and Hong Kong authorities intend to ensure that Jimmy Lai will not walk out of prison alive.

All of Jimmy Lai’s words and actions have adhered to the principles of “peace, rationality, and non-violence,” yet what he faces is the most brutal form of state violence that has lost all sense of reason. This once again proves to the world that no illusions should be held about the Chinese Communist Party. It is a regime that is challenging human civilization and trampling upon fundamental human rights.

I do not believe such a regime can endure for another 20 years. I hope Jimmy Lai can rely on his faith to endure the long darkness and hold on until the day he regains his freedom.
