Some people believe just about anything they want to believe. The archetype can be recognized by the ever ubiquitous claims that all you see is controlled by something/someone out of your immediate circle.

The further it is from the believer’s direct experience and social circle, the more it becomes a blank canvas for projected control, malice, and orchestration. "Othering" others through parochial mechanisms. And sometimes, it's not reptiles. Sometimes it's entire groups of real people, with real lives, that they want to scapegoat.

Quite the slippery slope:
hearsay becomes narrative > narrative becomes identity > identity becomes a permission slip to dehumanize.

It is MOST effective AGAINST the current status quo. Not because the status quo is particularly evil (maybe they are?), but because it is uniquely distant. And social distancing is the fuel.

The pattern is ancient, scalable, and depressingly reliable and has increased 1000x since the pandemic response.
