Volunteers who restored a community park in Durham have been sent a letter from the council threatening legal action.
This shows how councils have a habit of obstructing people trying to do the right thing or to do good.
Often it is the volunteers who are improving an area who are blocked by red tape and told that they have no right to do it, or that their work is a safety risk....
A man who restored graves at his local cemetery – which he did to help his mental health after he lost his dad and best friend to suicide – has been threatened with a legal order banning him from the site unless he stopped. The council says he needs risk assessments and health and safety certificates.
A few of us in Lords argued against this useless law & its bleedin' obvious consequences. Labour accused us of being cavailier about public safety/terrorism. But bureacratic rules re security staff etc always were a distraction from real causes of eg jihadi attacks such as Manchester Arena bombing. Grrr
The Milton Keynes car cruise – which goes back decades – has gone from an event involving hundreds of people every Sunday evening, to often fewer than 40, as people have stayed away due to fear of receiving fines.
The car cruising PSPO is supposed to target anti-social or dangerous behaviour – such as racing or stunts – it is in effect being interpreted as a complete ban on ‘car cruising’ of all kinds, including people just gathering and chatting and looking at each other’s cars.

2. Public freedom as a health and safety risk
End parks licences now!

Councils should end bureaucracy & fees for small events
@BristolCouncil parks licence will mean £700-900 fees for small yoga and qigong classes, even if they are only for 1-7 people and on a donation basis.
Ailie Tam explains why the licence means she has to stop her yoga classes.
@BristolCouncil you need to rethink this
CPNs are unprecedentedly open-ended powers, lacking substantive restrictions to ensure that the powers are used proportionately and fairly. They have been associated with many abuses of power and injustices. https://t.co/c0pSDKVyPw
