Big Mack, we both know why I don’t entirely agree with you on Pan-Africanism, or more specifically, with the way it is presented here. And the simple reason is agency. Your takes absolve the black man of almost every fault and place it entirely at the feet of the white man, and I refuse to accept that. Colonialism happened, I know. Neocolonialism is real, I agree. The interests of powerful countries in keeping African states weak and dependent are real. None of that, however, means we must pretend that every failure on this continent, or in Nigeria specifically, has a foreign hand behind it.

Is it the white man who caused Yahaya Bello to destroy the roads linking one community to another because he didn’t want the people there to vote for Natasha Akpoti? Was it the white man who caused the leadership of Kwara State to use containers—containers, Big Mack—as bridges? Was it the white man who made snakes swallow millions? Or governors celebrate road reconstructions, some of them literally spraying asphalt over debilitating roads and expecting their people to applaud? Is that also the white man’s fault?

I am an African, and I am proud to be one. But being proud of where I come from should not require me to become blind to the things we do wrong. Some of the behaviour of our own people is completely independent of the white man. How can a snake swallow millions? How can someone defecate into a gutter? How can someone deliberately demolish part of a road simply to remove the iron bars buried inside it? Is that also the white man’s fault?

At some point, we have to be honest with ourselves. The truth is that some of the failures we continually place at the feet of the white man are entirely ours. Emphasis on entirely. They are the products of our own choices, our own greed, our own corruption, our own wickedness and, sometimes, our own astonishing disregard for one another. We must own those failures before we can begin to fix them. Agency means accepting that we are not merely victims of history; we are also actors in the present. And until we learn to exercise that agency, we will keep blaming the white man for problems that, in many cases, only we have the power to solve.
