Don't chase losses. Life is long, there will always be another game. Play when they are tilted, quit when you are. It's only painful the first 1 hour after quitting, then life goes on.
A broke immigrant walked into Las Vegas with $50 in his pocket and a $10,000 loan from a friend. Over the next three years he built one of the largest gambling fortunes in Vegas history. Then he gave nearly all of it back at the tables that made him rich.
– Archie Karas, a Greek immigrant who arrived in the U.S. as a teenager, drove to Las Vegas in December 1992 after losing almost everything from an earlier gambling streak, arriving with roughly $50 to his name.
– He started by hustling pool games near the Tropicana, reportedly building his first six-figure bankroll from those matches before moving into high-stakes poker.
– He challenged some of the era's top poker professionals, including Puggy Pearson, Chip Reese, and Stu Ungar, at increasingly large stakes.
– By the summer of 1994, Cigar Aficionado reported his bankroll had climbed past $17 MILLION and was still growing.
– He eventually shifted to games of pure chance, including craps and baccarat, betting as much as $300,000 on a single roll of the dice.
– At his peak, his fortune is widely reported to have reached around $40 MILLION
– Though the exact figure has never been fully confirmed and some sources place it closer to $17–26 MILLION.
– His fortunes reversed dramatically in 1995 over the course of roughly a month
– He lost around $17 MILLION playing baccarat, another $11 MILLION at craps, and $2 MILLION in a poker match against Johnny Chan.
– A brief trip home to Greece didn't stop the bleeding, upon returning to Vegas, he lost most of what remained almost immediately, ending "The Run" essentially broke.
– He was later placed on Nevada's official list of excluded persons, the "Black Book," in 2017 following a cheating arrest at a San Diego casino years earlier.
He arrived with $50 borrowed from a friend and built a fortune bigger than most companies are worth. It took him three years to build it and about a month at the same casinos to lose all of it back.
