Excellent presentation by @machadoaas on microplastics in terrestrial ecosystems showing several effects on plants and soil biophysical environment.

QUESTION: What makes someone a scientist?
Iโll start with one:
If you โdoโ the science (i.e. generate the data) then youโre a scientist. Period. It doesnโt matter if you are a bachelors/masters/PhD student. If you DO the science, you are a scientist.
My 3-year experiment is out today! This is a biodegradable plastic bag after 3-years in the marine environment, and it can hold a full bag of shopping. Biodegradable/compostable items do not necessarily break down quickly in natural environments like the ocean ๐
*Free* online open course on marine litter. Covering options and tools to combat pollution; intended to inspire leadership, increase awareness and stimulate creative solutions (available in multiple languages).

How important are freshwater systems as a source of marine plastics? 4.2t estimated to enter the Black Sea daily from the Danube River

Really interesting talk today by @lola_paradinas looking at different methods for sampling coastal microplastics - including some great ideas for controls. Image of preliminary finds from wild mussels. #SEECC2019#microplastics
Super interesting couple of days at #SEECC2019 - so grateful to have had the opportunity to share some of my research, meet new folk, and learn about other new findings! Even picked up a prize for my talk! ๐ฆ๐ฉ
Iโve handled the review of > 1000 papers at @nature. Over time, you notice aspects of presentation on which reviewers tend to comment. In the interests of minimizing hassles during review, I offer the following suggestions (a bit targeted to climate papers).
Marine plastic has an ecological, social and economic impact across the globe. This study estimates a highly conservative cost to humans of $3K - $33K for every tonne of #marineplastic. Please RT and read to find out more https://t.co/wE9IMr5r3y
Handed in something I've been working on for about 7 months (plus planning prior to that) and that was a pretty good feeling!
Really grateful to have had the opportunity to do this and super excited to be able to share some of my findings next month at @2019Seecc !๐ฆ๐ฟ
