Very kind words from my long- time friend, Hugh, who is often the lone voice on radio still doing deep dives, still valuing substance, and did I mention, still caring about moral clarity in foreign policy

The need of the hour in conservatism is not "team ball" but honest ball that is movement-driven. The new "big, beautiful bill" has been a great opportunity for objective, conservative analysis, praising what is good and criticizing what is bad. Watching some "conservatives" pretend this bill is "the greatest thing ever" is disheartening. But that INTENSIFIES the burden to get legitimate criticism correct.
On the recent @thedispatch podcast criticizing the bill, @asymmetricinfo said that these increased deficits "force bond yields higher." I have spent as much time as any conservative economic voice I know criticizing this bill's insufficiency in dealing with the national debt and annual budget deficits. But WHY do conservatives insist on saying that additional deficit spending pushes bond yields higher when that is PATENTLY AND EMPIRICALLY AND VERIFIABLY FALSE? @DavidAFrench made the comment that we spend more on interest expense than medicare (false) and national defense (false). David brought up how total debt-to-GDP from Reagan until now is up from 49% to 120% (which is correct), but didn't mention that in that same time period the 10-year bond yield went from 9% to 4%.
Now, Megan and David are 100% right to criticize this bill's lack of seriousness around the debt, but the facts about interest rates matter and how bond yields work matters, and being in a position to credibly criticize the parts of this bill that deserve criticism means presenting a full argument that is economically cogent and historically accurate. Runaway national debt must be dealt with because it is compressing growth and intensifying risk. We owe it to the cause of limited government and fiscal responsibility to make our correct argument, correctly. Excessive government indebtedness crowds out private sector activity, puts downward pressure on growth, and hurts opportunity for our children and grandchildren. THAT is the argument that must be made. No one seems willing to make it.
“If all men are created equal, that is final. If they are endowed with inalienable rights, that is final. If governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed, that is final. No advance, no progress can be made beyond these propositions. If anyone wishes to deny their truth or their soundness, the only direction in which he can proceed historically is not forward, but backward toward the time when there was no equality, no rights of the individual, no rule of the people. Those who wish to proceed in that direction can not lay claim to progress. They are reactionary. Their ideas are not more modern, but more ancient, than those of the Revolutionary fathers.”
