Even before I wondered if anyone would try to connect them thought "wait a minute, Senator Mothma, the Ghorman massacre was evil and terrible but it wasn't a genocide".

That's sloppy language. If the show runners had this connection in mind it detracts from an exceptional show.

The woke takeover in tabletop is for a few reasons, but the main reason is that we let it happen.

Old guard tabletop gamers were the geekiest of the geeks, welcoming everyone and not wanting to cause waves.

The good nature of gamers to get along was abused and manipulated for power, for greed. The very geeks who welcomed everyone were tarred and feathered with slurs: racists, phobists, colonists, sexist, etc. All made up, all cancel culture weapons to seize control of the industry. Gaming was the most welcome of all places but was branded as the least. A lie.

Then mass market media like Stranger Things and Critical Role flooded the market with new money, not from players, but from participants and those seeking the cool-factor of what used to be niche. It is estimated that many more people watch Critical Role than actually play the game. But they do like to collect dice and merch they can take pictures with and post to Instagram.

This money sustained and grew the industry and the Covid boom did the rest. The new woke companies were filled with activists and sales were fantastic. The modern audience had arrived, the grognards too, kept buying.

The money was the incentive and the "proof." The capture was complete. Unlike in video game, there was a vast modern audience ready to larp as gamers, as woke as the wokest theater kids.

And the core players and buyers? They keep their heads down. A very quiet bunch. Don't rock the boat. And I understand. The makers and media voices of your favorite games will cancel you in a heartbeat. So they buy and keep buying, hoping that the next version of rules won't be woker than the last.

But what happens when tabletop is no longer a media cool theme, and the covid boom has surely worn off by now. There are some cracks in DnD already, as the hype dies down.

Tabletop might be forced to change once again, but it will take some time...and it can't happen unless the core players want it to, find their voice, and push back by voting with their wallets.
