The Friends of Swindon Health Hydro are a group of volunteers who campaign for the restoration of a building of national, not just local, significance.

The wonderful #swimsuits in the photo were knitted by '#Swindon Big Knit'. They are 3 from the 12 that were knitted specially to display at the #Health #Hydro. There are 3 on mannequins in reception at present and all 12 will be on display in due course.

The #Turkish #Baths, in the #Health =Hydro in Milton Road are the oldest #Victorian-style Turkish Baths still operating. They will be closed for a while longer when the building is reopened, because of the work being carried out.

Urgent works to the #Turkish #Baths in the #Swindon #Health #Hydro will include the careful renewal of roof coverings, conservation #repairs to timber structures, reinstatement of leadwork, re-insulation, installation of #energy-efficient glazing, and enable safe #maintenance.

Work to protect the #Turkish #Baths from water ingress. Funding is being provided by the #Historic England #Heritage at Risk Fund to deliver essential capital repairs to the roof of the Grade II* listed Turkish Baths at #Swindon’s #Health #Hydro.

The #Swindon #Health #Hydro was originally the #GWR #Medical Fund #Baths & #Dispensary. By #1947, the building boasted #doctors, a #dispensary, #dental #surgeries and dental #laboratory, ophthalmology, chiropody, psychology, physiotherapy and an #X-ray room. Dispensary in action.

Many of the #materials used in the #Swindon #Health #Hydro were made in inside the Swindon #Railworks - the #stained #glass, the red #brick and the #iron-work (including the roof trusses over the #pools). See a stained glass window and red brick.

The #rail workers who built and financed the #swindon #health #hydro used the highest quality #materials - #stained #glass, #ceramic bricks, red #brick, #hardwoods. A view inside the #Turkish #baths shows the use of ceramic bricks.
