I hope that GA press is paying attention to @ericgeller who understands the tech problems with GA's equipment.
(Although, I'm not sure I agree that "problems will be temporary." BMDs cannot create a reliable paper trail...and that is permanent harm. )
Journalists:While making sense of election system security, it's critical to consider HOW a paper ballot is used to know if it actually provides RESILIENCE in our election systems. In states like GA & FL, recounts won't manually recount ballots from text, ballots will be rescanned
The all-ballot-marking-devices setup in the perennially troubled and unexpectedly competitive state of Georgia creates the risk of widespread technical malfunctions, as happened in June.
These problems will be temporary, but they could sow chaos and still depress turnout.
Allowing people with COVID and those under quarantine due to exposure to walk into an enclosed polling place risks the health of poll workers, watchers, and other voters.
Use #EmergencyPaperBallots for these voters, allowing them to mark a ballot without leaving their car.
This happens repeatedly; computer scientists have tried to provide expertise to election officials on voting system security, and they are rebuffed, preferring to buy less secure or reliable systems. #electionsecurity

Here’s the letter @CoalitionGoodGv sent to election officials across the state, encouraging them to use paper poll books updated with absentee ballot status and emergency paper ballots to reduce wait times on Election Day.
It includes links to the court order.
When hurricane zeta swept through GA, voting halted in many polling places.
It was a stark reminder that a solid backup plan is critical for Election Day.
@CoalitionGoodGv shared this with local officials.

Health safety for voters/workers, predictable wait times, simulations for security access safety, workloads, privacy, transparency. International team (computer scientists, system engineers, designers, sociologists, policy experts) plus 20 amazing students. Thnx PIT-UN for grant.
Read the letter @CoalitionGoodGv sent to GA election directors about how paper poll books that include current absentee ballot status and sensible use of emergency paper ballots will help with lines on Election Day.

My amazing research group at Georgia Tech is taking on the entire voting ecosystem not only voting machines. Secure and Safe Elections Research Group to Provide Live Wait Times to Fulton County Voters on Election Day https://t.co/aCUaV85Gb8
Emergency paper ballots for at least 10% of registered voters in every precinct, by law.
Will they be used to keep lines short, and allow voters to cast their ballot in precinct?
That decision is up to local election officials.
@MarilynRMarks1@dufort_jeanne@Saira_Fa @MorganCoBOER .@Saira_Fa Can the DPG help us get the word out that Counties CAN do this proactively on their own? How-to for Updated Paper Pollbooks is in the Manual.
And they need to make sure PW are trained on WHEN and HOW to use emergency paper ballots.
