@Saytana24 @iamMauriceW An eye-opener for me is the verb “grandfathered in.” That comes from Jim Crow days when a citizen, to be allowed to register to vote, had first to prove that their grandfather had voted — an impossibility for anyone who was formerly enslaved.
@BeschlossDC I was teaching English in Osaka, Japan after graduating from college. A student met me on my walk from the train and, practicing his best English, asked if I had heard about the Space Shuttle. I said no. “It expanded.” A tiny, terrible hand gesture made his meaning plain.
