The first job I got immediately after graduation didn’t come from a vacancy posting. I wrote an email highlighting my qualifications, skills, and why I would be a great addition to the organization’s team. I attached my CV and a link to my ePortfolio, then sent it to about five organizations.

Some days later, one of the organizations invited me for an interview and I got hired.

The other organizations replied to let me know they didn’t have a vacancy at the time but would keep me in mind for future opportunities. Two reached out eventually as promised, but the other two never did.

When I encourage people to cold-email, it’s not just for the sake of saying it. I share this advice because I’ve experienced firsthand how cold-emailing can be a game changer in both academia and industry.

Recently, I even applied for a position I clearly wasn’t qualified for, and I still got it. Don’t wait for opportunities; Create them.
