2. Lee on the other hand addresses and answers a much different question: Could Trump have not in fact orchestrated this final stage in a far more effective way? Lee's answer is, of course, yes! Trump appears to desire an end to the war even at the cost of "Trusting" the Mullahs
I've finally realized how to reconcile the two seemingly disparate opinions of @Doranimated & @LeeSmithDC -- esp evident in their most recent pieces (Lee in @tabletmag & Mike in @TheFP.
They are each answering two different - although related questions:
1. Mike answers the all-important historical question of, "Has Trump not in fact advanced the USA's interests with respect to Iran in the past year more than every president, the Intelligence Community and the State Dept have done collectively in the past 45 years(?!) He has!
Lost in the noise about deal terms, and the underappreciation of the current level of U.S. leverage, is the most important piece of context:
President Trump has achieved what 45 years of U.S. policy could not. The regime's military leadership is decimated, its economy is in freefall, and it is diplomatically isolated more than ever.
Just a couple years ago Iran was building drone manufacturing in the U.S. backyard, Venezuela.
@FactualGalore@LeeSmithDC@tabletmag Lee @LeeSmithDC
makes this point of Trump's responsibility in his article. He does not flinch from it:
"But Vance is no more responsible for undermining Trump and shielding Iran than Anthony Fauci was for getting Joe Biden elected—the buck stops with the commander-in-chief."
The Strait will become less important - you're right - but not in the near future.
What Iran will do and why they signed is for the same reason they always do - they will delay and talk and talk and in the end give up northing. Whether they will get nothing remains to be seen...
@artman8887@LeeSmithDC@tabletmag You're right about Obama.
But Lee Smith has been pro-Trump from the start & did the most to expose the Russia Hoax in
https://t.co/ul0w3fENHn
So while the picture is provocative, Lee isn't saying anything "just b/c Trump engineered it."
But I hope it doesn't pan out how he's said
@sweetrudegirl@LeeSmithDC@tabletmag@realDonaldTrump If you read all the way to the end, Lee still seems to hold out some hope that Trump might recover. Trump put out a tweet just a few minutes after this and it almost seems like an answer to lee's piece (probably an answer to everyone). But there is still time...
What Trump calls the worst deal ever negotiated, and has identified for more than a decade as Exhibit A in the case against American loserdom, has now become the pattern of his own Iran policy — Obama's policy. I explain today in @tabletmag

Trump:
My Agreement with Iran is the exact opposite, A WALL TO NO NUCLEAR WEAPON! In fact, they no longer want a Nuclear Weapon, nor will they have one, either through purchase, development, or any other form of procurement. The Deal is scheduled to get signed tomorrow, and immediately after it is signed, the Hormuz Strait is OPEN TO ALL. Our relationship with Iran is a much different and better one than previous Administrations have had. Unlike Obama’s Hundreds of Billions of Dollars in payments to them, including 1.7 Billion Dollars in green, cold cash, no money will exchange hands. At the appropriate time, when all is calm, we will go in and get the Nuclear Dust, buried deep under the powerful sunken granite mountains, thanks to our beautiful B-2 Bombers and their brilliant pilots, and downblend and destroy it, whether in Iran, or the United States. We look forward to working with Iran, and the entire Middle East, long into the future. Hopefully, this process will all work out quickly, easily, and smoothly. If it doesn’t, we have the ultimate alternative, hopefully never to be used again! Thank you for your attention to this matter!!!
@LeeSmithDC@tabletmag Wow Lee! You are fearless. That was one hell-of-a-piece! Some really memorable quotes.
Something tells me that President Trump won't be retweeting this out. But I hope he reads it nonetheless.
It's still early in this game, but this does not sound far off at all I'm afraid...
WOW @LeeSmithDC
"...UAE payoff shows otherwise. The Iranians wanted the money up front because their priority isn’t cash to help them back on their feet—they know the money is coming—but, with the help of his vice president, to rub Trump’s nose in defeat"

@AngelicaKamen They used to flat out LOVE him when he mostly created Teslas and, more importantly, didn't directly support Trump. Fast-Forward to when he's created the safest car whether self-driven or human-driven but... alas, he supports Trump: "Musk is a piece of khara!" 🤷♂️
@ApoStructura 5 minutes later he says "there are only 25 satellites launched a year every year and thats not going to change." The SpaceX person on the panel said "thats true if you're looking out of the rearview".
SpaceX launched 53 satellits in the last 24 hours
@1TxStar@StealthMedical1 Great analogy — although it’s even stronger than that - it’s a wholesale transplant of their goat-selling cultures into a place wherein Robert’s Rule of Order reigns.
Alas, not knowing — and clearly uninterested in abiding by R.R.O, the transplant didn’t “take .” 🤷♂️
CRAZY REPORT: Washington Post: Qatar sought assurances from Iran early in the war that it would not target the Ras Laffan gas facility. In exchange, Doha offered to halt gas production, driving up prices and increasing pressure on Israel and the U.S. to end the conflict.
A senior security official described it as a “secret deal.” The effort collapsed after Iran struck the Ras Laffan facility in mid-March.
From WH official on Iran deal:
1. Nuclear material will be destroyed and removed
2. Nuclear program will be dismantled
3. None of their money released until they perform
4. Strait of Hormuz will be open
5. No Iran funding of terrorist groups
Official adds: "This is what they agreed to. This is a performance based deal."
