MUCH MORE:
The Florida State vs SMU game is in a power outage delay. If you're wondering how the broadcast on ESPN still rolls while the power is out at the stadium, it's pretty simple.
The broadcast survived a blackout the stadium couldn't because it was never running on the stadium's power in the first place. A network like ESPN doesn't plug its cameras into the building. It hires a mobile production company, usually one of the giants like NEP Group or Game Creek Video, to roll in a compound of semi-trailers that park in the lot, and that compound is its own self-contained television station. One truck is the control room where the director switches cameras, another handles replay and graphics, another handles getting the signal out, and the whole cluster can be twenty million dollars of gear sitting in a parking lot. It runs on its own diesel generators, separate from the stadium entirely, with backup generators on top of that, because the one thing a network will never allow is the show going dark. The feed leaves the compound by satellite dish or a fiber line straight back to ESPN's hub in Bristol, none of it touching the building's electrical system. When Doak Campbell went dark, the compound never noticed.
Florida State spent $250 million renovating this stadium and it couldn't keep the lights on for its own nationally televised opener. The broadcast, which is where the real revenue in college football comes from, was untouchable, because the people who run television learned a long time ago never to depend on the building. The venue lost power and the game stopped, while the thing generating the actual money never went down for a second.
I desperately need a brand new season of Last Chance U where they go back to East Mississippi ten years later and check in on Buddy’s walk with Christ while explaining how the portal/NIL era has changed JUCO football
